Get Out of Town – The Death of Birkenhead

M &S

The future of retail in Birkenhead. Harsh maybe – but we guarantee more accurate than any Wirral Council approved artist’s impression.

So farewell then to the Marks & Spencer store in Birkenhead after a long and continuous presence in the town.  It may be only one store – but it is hugely symbolic of the state of Birkenhead town centre – and do we mean state !

It’s certainly a fist in the face to Birkenhead First isn’t it? Proving to the Wirral Chamber of Commerce backed initiative ,which aims to make Birkenhead an attractive and vibrant retail and leisure destination, that there’s more needed than litter picks and pop-ups when it comes to the cut-throat world of commerce.

Whilst there have long been rumours that House of Fraser is on the way out  -and let’s face it since the demise of Beattie’s it has rapidly gone downhill – it staggers on , but for how long?  As far as we’re concerned that would be the final nail in the coffin and then all Birkenhead will be fit for is a set for a remake of  ‘Dawn of the Living Dead’ – the zombie movie set in a shopping mall.

As for Birkenhead MP Frank Field “demanding” a meeting with M&S chiefs – that’s the trouble with him , he’s so used to “demanding” and getting his own way with Wirral councillors that when the harsh reality of the business world hits he’s suddenly out of his depth and left wallowing in the poverty of his constituents , all prissy pursed lips and a put upon expression.

Council leader Cllr Phil  ‘Power Boy Pip’ Davies is even more delusional and in peak Pollyanna mode is quoted in the Liverpool Echo as saying :

Good public transport links , £2 all-day parking and plans to re-invigorate the market are positive signs , and the business community ,residents and shoppers are keen to see to see Birkenhead invested in and improved”

But even Pip must know that a headline such as ” Make no mistake … M&S Birkenhead closure is a disaster”  in the usually compliant Liverpool Echo means that this is not a good news story.

It’s not a question of running down Birkenhead – it’s already run down or to use Presidential language  – it’s a shithole! Time for Pip, Frankenfield and co to wake up and smell the weed wafting down Grange Road.

So spare us the artists’ impressions for fantasy schemes that will never happen , the deceptive , expensive and manipulative wraparound advertising features in Wirral Globe, the press releases about the billions of pounds about to come Birkenhead’s way soon, honest, the cheque’s in the post etc; etc;

If all Wirral Council’s ‘transformers’ can come up with is plans for more car parking charges and a drive-in Maccy D’s whilst transforming their bank balance at our expense and jetting off to Cannes to hawk the tawdry wares that Birkenhead has to ‘offer’ then surely Marksy’s departure is the beginning of the end for the town.

And so we say to the young people of Birkenhead – get an education and GET OUT OF TOWN! Leave the dereliction to the derelicts and those who have been derelict in their duty for decades.

  1. The council just dont get it, understatement i know.
The sellout to Asda was the first move to decimating the precinct and especially the local businesses in the market.
Charing cross is a dead zone full of charity shops and bookies.
Boots will soon follow M&S concentrating on retail parks with FREE PARKING.
The councils big plan a drive thru Mcdonalds so both ends of town can be covered in litter and the it should be named drive thru and out of town.
Why does Frankie think the bosses of M&S would listen to anything he has to say the boss of Topshop certainly didnt give him the time of day yet another store that abandoned Birko.
Come February the council will be voting on parking charges for New Brighton and West Kirby opening the door for Morrisons to also charge in those two towns like i said they just dont get it.
Cant wait to see the parking revenue from OUR country parks when the Wirral people refuse to take part in, 26,000 people who signed the petition were totally ignored including small business owners who will be massively affected with possible closure or redundancy for some staff.
Phil Davies and his sheep should hold their heads in shame how run down they are making the LEISURE PENINSULA.

    • Oh yes the LEISURE PENINSULA – who could forget about that BS.
Are they referring to the Amalfi Coast where Labour councillors and their spouses can indulge in random racism with impunity?

  2. All I can say is that it is time for the people of Wirral (Especially those in Birkenhead) to smell the coffee and realise they are not best served by this current Council leader. Scrap the Hoylake golf resort (just write off the £hundreds of thousands already wasted!) and let’s have a fresh new Council leader who will start promoting real investment in Birkenhead and the Wirral that will TRULY serve the people living within (while also protecting our Green Belt). The current cabal are stagnant.

Time to resign Phil Davies! Over the years I have had a bellyful of your regular pre-election #FakeNews schemes which has brought Birkenhead nothing but despair and failure. Independent existing Businesses are voting with their feet. I doubt M&S will be the last.

  3. If ever Waterstones or Moodz closes you’ll know Birkenhead Town is DEAD.

Is it Power Pips masterplan to allow M&S Beatties, Recession Bar etc to close so Birkenhead can be relocated to Bidston so Peel Holdings or that (new Brighton) developer can line the Pips pocket in ten years time?

I’m watching you Mr Power Pip

    • Waterstones Birkenhead ,hadn’t realised what a hotbed of political disquiet this meeting place was . Whilst being a customer the other day I found myself surrounded by locals although they described themselves as from “over the road” all talking “politics” .. if this parliament of over the road ers has anything to do with it Frank Field and co can rot in hell. enjoying the passionate remonstration, the colourful choice of describing words for the failed hero, which I need not repeat, I felt the need to encourage the debate so I signposted them to Wirral leaks and other blogs as a go to place for an alternative to the leaflets …we don’t need to read anymore they cried we live in it !!!, PAT CLEARY is the only one who gets their vote, so whatever it is you do councillor your support is genuine and determined , congratulations a job well done coz these fabulous locals are not wall flowers no side to them whatsoever, according to your fans you’ve won on honesty. Oh and the fact you tried to sort out the poets post box whatever that is !!

      • Thanks for the recommendation.
Just nice to hear that we have a questioning local electorate in Waterstones’.
Dare we suggest it’ll be when we get a questioning local electorate in ‘The Asda’ that Field & Co will sit up and take notice.

      • The locals shop is “the Asda” !! Had to laugh tho (sorry) with one guy ex camell lairds “stopped voting red when that fat twat Prescott said he had bulimia” when I offered that it is very much a dreadful mental health issue , his reply “my wife walked out on me coz I couldn’t afford to put proper food on the table and he can eat what he wants and then throw it up !” He wasn’t interested in seeing the mental torture of insecurity.

      • “Two Jags” Prescott pontificating on poverty.
        Everything that’s wrong.
And let’s not mention the ugly fucker was fucking his secretary.
