EXCLUSIVE : The runners and riders in the race to be the next MP for Birkenhead

red silks

Red silks all the way in a two horse race?

16th February 2019 could be the most the most significant date in Birkenhead’s  political history in the last 40 years. Birkenhead Constituency Labour Party (CLP) have started the process of finding a replacement for Frank Field – the man who has been the town’s MP since 1979 – and this Saturday will see a special meeting take place where a Selection Committee will vote on who will be the parliamentary candidate at the next General Election.

So let’s have a look at who is in the running for £77k (plus expenses) prize that comes with being first past the post:
Screen Shot 2018-12-20 at 05.59.24

Whilst we understand that Frank Field is a non-runner following his withdrawal of the Labour whip and can no longer be considered a candidate we just hope that someone has checked the rule book when it comes to running for selection-  just in case there’s a Steward’s Enquiry when the result is announced. We say this as a journalist at New Statesman recently wrote this :

Screen Shot 2019-02-11 at 09.05.26

Therefore assuming that Field is out of the race who are jockeying for position to be riding high as the Labour candidate in one of the safest seats in the UK ?

Well first off in stall 1 and running in the ‘Maomentum ‘ colours is Tony ‘Tight Fit’ Norbury, local councillor for Prenton and scion of the so-called Wirral ‘hard left’. He has a favourite’s chance due to his ‘comrade’ John Maher and that latter’s control of the Birkenhead CLP and consequently the make up of the  Selection Committee.  Under these circumstances Norbury would appear to be the front runner…

Norbury scarf

However in stall 2 running Norbury close will be Mick Whitley in the Unite colours . We recently introduced you to him here and reported

Mr Whitley, formerly a long-standing convener at the Vauxhall car plant in nearby Ellesmere Port, was born in the area and is the former north-west regional secretary of the Unite union.

He has gained the support of Momentum, which holds a powerful presence in north-west England, while left-wing MPs such as John McDonnell, Rebecca Long-Bailey and Dan Carden have voiced their support.

The local branches of Unite, FBU, RMT, BFAWU and Aslef have also formally endorsed Mr Whitley’s candidacy.

Thus far ,despite living in Wirral (but not in Birkenhead?), Whitley has, up until now, not had a local political (or media) profile. However now that Unite’s Regional Political Officer,Alison Spencer Scragg, is running his campaign (and pulling the reins) Whitley has taken a sudden interest in turning up at food banks, demos and picket lines and making sure he’s seen to be doing so on his Twitter account which was only set up in November 2018…

mick 'n jez

Jez ‘n’ Mick

Finally, in stall 3 we have the token filly in the race. Theresa ‘I’m not Tony or Mick’  Griffin is running in the colours of  the EU flag/Unison/GMB. The clock is ticking on MEP Griffin as she looks like being out of a job by the end of next month unless Brexit is halted or delayed. Fresh from her defeat in the selection in Walton in 2017 we predict Theresa will again aim to be the token woman on the shortlist and hope that following her defeat she may make it third time lucky and actually win in Liverpool Riverside when their trigger ballot happens and current Labour incumbent Louise Ellman is ousted.  Consequently Griffin’s half-hearted attempt to become the next MP for Birkenhead has thus far amounted to nothing more than taking a sudden interest in Birkenhead’s flyovers :

Screen Shot 2019-02-12 at 11.58.56

Thus a Labour insider sums up the current selection process situation for us as follows :

There will also be several local also rans who will no doubt throw their caps into the ring but in truth the members of Birkenhead CLP will have a choice between Tony Norbury or Mick Whitley, which will be akin to them being asked if they would like to be stabbed or burned to death.  Ah thank God for a new and kinder politics……

Fieldwatch 5 : ‘Today Birkenhead, Tomorrow the World’ / Meet Mr Whitley

Bunker

The barbarians are at the door but at least Frank Field has plenty of other interests to keep him occupied…

Another big news week for the Birkenhead MP .

Firstly comes the news that a struggling Ellesmere Port secondary school has now transferred to The Frank Field Education Trust after crisis-ridden University of Chester Academies Trust (UCAT) abolished itself. But as Cheshire Live reports there are concerns about the move. Ray McHale of West Cheshire Trades Union Council commented :

“We only recently heard that Frank Field was establishing a free school – and his trust is now in charge of its first primary school in Wilmslow. That school is rated outstanding by Ofsted. However, to hand a struggling secondary school to a trust with no experience seems to be courting further problems rather than finding a solution.”

But what’s as long as Frankenfield gets his name on another building eh?

Of course the right Royal coup of this week’s Prince Harry/Meghan visit to Birkenhead which served primarily as a distraction from the local political upheaval that Frankenfield faces. However even the fawning local press couldn’t compete with The Daily Telegraph (aka Torygraph) titled Duchess of Sussex reveals she is six months pregnant with the baby due in April or May when it came to squirming sycophancy.  We defy you to read an extract from this report without a) throwing up  and b) wanting to refer Field for a psychiatric assessment :

The couple visited Number 7, a cafe and supermarket which offers discounted foods to help those on lower incomes live within their means…

Before departing, the Duke and Duchess were asked to to jointly unveil a plaque officially declaring Number 7 open, as Mr Field said his short speech had been inspired by Meghan’s own words to him.

“Ma’am as you said, it’s a great example to the country and to the world,” he told her. “Yes it is,” she replied, nodding…

Of the supermarket, he added: ”We want it to be better than Waitrose.”

Whilst ‘Megalomania’ and ‘Delusional’ were the first two words that came to mind we’d be grateful if someone could remind us which century are we living in again? Back to Foodbank Frank’s beloved Victorian era where poor people knew their place, were ever so humble and bowed and scraped to their ‘betters (i.e people with more money and power than them). Meanwhile a couple of days later Prince Harry and Meghan rock up at the Royal Albert Hall for a Cirque Du Soleil gig with the latter all dolled up in a £3,400 Roland Mouret frock  – see here. Wonder whether she picked up the sparkly number at Number 7? After all we know that Frank has aspirations for the enterprise -‘Today Birkenhead, Tomorrow the World!”- which are all well and good , but better than Waitrose?  That’ll be the day you can buy a Roland Mouret frock in  T J Hughes!

From the Daily Telegraph it’s a natural progression to the Morning Star as we bring you news of a pretender to Frankenfield’s crown.  As you can read in the Morning Star’s story Fight to replace Frank field kicks off in Birkenhead

THE fight to replace Frank Field as MP for Birkenhead kicked off today as veteran trade unionist Mick Whitley announced his candidacy.

Sources in the Labour Party have told the Star that right-wing former MEP Theresa Griffin is likely to also contest the seat.

Mr Field, first elected to Parliament in 1979, has been unpopular among local Labour members since the 1980s.

He lost a vote of no confidence in August last year, before resigning the Labour whip — and thus automatically leaving the party — a month later.

Mr Field meet Mr Whitley :

Field of War – Let the Political Battle for Birkenhead Commence!

Bunker

After the phoney war that was Frank Field flouncing out of the local Labour Party and resigning the whip it would seem that hostilities have begun in earnest in what was dubbed the ‘Battle for Birkenhead’ in the local media , as if the town was the personal fiefdom of the sitting MP!

P1010610

We state this after receiving a leaked email sent out by Momentum which anticipates that Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) will instruct the Birkenhead Constituency Labour Party (CLP) to begin to select a new Prospective Parliamentary Candidate

It is further anticipated that there will be a large volume of applications and Momentum are requesting that anyone who wants to receive their support ‘must subscribe to the aims and values of the organisation as well as, and most importantly, support the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn.’

This ,presumably, rules out Frank Field as he has done everything he can to undermine the Labour leader since he mischievously nominated him for leader ‘to encourage debate within the Labour Party’. This has since become a classic case of be careful what you wish for !

Of course being a wily politician and a peerless media manipulator we anticipate that Field will be in the bunker and gathering the old guard in a last ditch attempt to stave off what seems an inevitable defeat on the political battleground of Birkenhead.

2019 is already shaping up to be a momentous year for local politics.

In the new year, we anticipate that Labour’s NEC will instruct Birkenhead CLP to begin procedures to select a new Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, following the resignation of Frank Field from the Labour Party.

In the past few weeks, Momentum has called hundreds of members and supporters and many of you have participated in our survey consultation in Birkenhead. Thank you to those who spoke to us during this process. It was important to hear your hopes and aspirations for a Labour candidate in Birkenhead. Your views matter and will be fed into our process going forward whether you are active in Momentum and Labour or not. If we did not manage to speak to you during our consultation feel free to email us on the contact details provided below.

We have endeavoured to have the most open and involved process possible and have tried to involve every Momentum member and supporter in Birkenhead.

As is the case with seats like Birkenhead, it is expected that there will be a large volume of applications. If you are thinking about standing yourself or know somebody that is, and you/they wish to receive the support of Momentum through this process, you can apply by responding to this email. You do not have to be a member of Momentum to apply but you must subscribe to the aims and values of the organisation as well as, and most importantly, support the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn.

How to Apply for Momentum’s Support

  • Please email damian.bailey@peoplesmomentum.com to request an application form be sent.
  • Fill in the application form and return todamian.bailey@peoplesmomentum.com by midnight on Sunday 6th January.
  • If you have a problem with applying by the deadline owing to personal circumstances and/or have a problem filling in the application or any special requirements, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

What Happens Next?

  • Momentum’s democratically elected governing body, the National Coordinating Group has convened a panel of NCG members. These NCG representatives are elected by thousands of Momentum members to represent you. In addition, members from the Wirral and Birkenhead will be represented on the panel. It will be the panel’s task to review applications and interview prospective candidates.
  • The process to endorse a candidate will begin soon after the applications close. At this point, applications will be reviewed, and interviews will take place soon after with those candidates.
  • Prospective candidates will need to be available for interview at a date arranged by the panel in conjunction with the prospective candidates.

If you are interested, we hope to hear from you very soon. Indeed, if you have any questions do not hesitate to get in touch.

Raise the Red Flag

Red Flag

Raise the red flag, they’re under starter’s orders and they’re off…

As you can see from this leaked ‘ Wirral Momentum’ email to local Labour Party members below ,  it is an important day for the future of Wirral and more particularly Wirral Council as shortlisting and selection meetings for Labour councillors start today.

Important meetings for you to attend

The time has come for you to play a part in shaping the future of Wirral Borough Council.

Shortlisting and selection meetings start on Tuesday, 16th October, and will run deep into November across the peninsula. These meetings allow branches to choose which candidate will carry the Labour flag for them, and you, in the May 2019 Council elections.

Democracy is not a spectator sport. In the conversations we have all had in the past three years, and longer for some, you have expressed that you want to see democratically elected representatives who share your ideas, take them forward, and make Wirral a better, more socialist place to live.

If you have been a member of the Labour Party since 15th May 2018, you should be invited to these important meetings.

Wirral Labour left / Momentum urges all of its supporters to attend the shortlisting and selection meetings for their local branch, and take part in the democratic process that we all signed up to be a part of.

The situation will be different in different branches. If you need any more information about your branch or the selection process, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Reply to this email with a phone number, in case we don’t have that, and we will urgently put you in touch with Labour Party left wingers in your area.

Quick off the starting blocks and perhaps jumping the gun is current Labour Councillor Bernie ‘The Bruiser’ Mooney who sent out this message to Wallasey Labour party members on October 12th which indicates to us that it is ‘squeaky bum’ time for some long standing Labour councillors , especially as we have been advised:

Some points, Mooney sent this out before Liscard has even shortlisted and may be in breach of some rules, she has never before mentioned Corbyn in any of her leaflets , she has managed to find an old photo of her with two leftwingers and the MP. Complaints have gone in ,this will go further.

Dear

After eight years working hard to represent Labour values in an era of vicious Tory attacks on our local funding, I am standing once more to be your Labour candidate for Liscard Ward in the local elections.

Here are some of the reasons I believe I am worthy of your support:

  • I have been a champion of the community on the Council since taking the seat from the Conservatives in 2011.
  • I have lived here for 40 years and raised my family here.
  • I am a proud and active trade unionist being a member of Unite for 40 years almost as long as I’ve been a Labour member.

I am currently the Deputy leader of the council and hold the portfolio for children and families. This is a crucial role because after years of relentless Tory cuts one in four local children now live in poverty. This is an outrage in 2018 and we can only stop it by electing a Labour Government led by Jeremy Corbyn. He will govern Britain for the many and not the few.
One of my proudest achievements as a councillor has been to secure £500,000 from the City Region in high street funding for Liscard. Our local shopping area has been in decline for too long. This money will be available from next March. I will work tirelessly to ensure that it improves the quality of our community and begins to address the ongoing issues of inequality and provides new opportunities for local business regeneration.
I have fought alongside those who are opposing the night time closure of our fire station and the proposals to close the local NHS walk-in centre. These reductions in our vital public services have to be challenged and I promise that alongside my other two Labour councillor colleagues I will continue to be in the forefront of the battle to reverse these closures. I have already met with local health chiefs to express my disgust with the threat to close the walk in centres and I along with other community leaders and MPs from all over the City Region, will be meeting shortly with the fire authority to fight for our local station.
I have a record of activism and dedication as your representative. I want to carry on being your champion and I still have a lot more to do to ensure that we can transform Liscard and uphold Labour values on the Wirral. The shortlisting meeting is Thursday 18th October at 7pm at St Albans community centre which is opposite the cherry tree car park. If you wish to take part in the decision you must be at the centre before 7pm. You will not be allowed in if you are late.
I hope I can rely on your support so that I can continue the vital work I do for our local area.
Please do not hesitate to contact me for a chat if you have any questions on issues. You can contact me on: XXXX XXXXXXX
Many thanks,

Cllr Bernie Mooney

Postscript : Can anyone help us identify the mysterious ‘Paul’  mentioned in the following message :

Just discovered that someone called Paul has been ringing Liscard members asking for them to vote for Mooney even before the shortlisting meeting…

“Five years ago, we were a local authority in crisis: focused on cuts and on the verge of government intervention. Since then, we’ve been recognised as the Local Government Chronicle’s ‘Most Improved Council’, experiencing the fastest turnaround of any council in the UK. So what’s changed? In a nutshell, we refuse to give up; we never stop moving. Our pragmatic, innovative and bold plan, ‘2020 Vision’ will ensure that we’re getting the basics right; that we’re achieving more; that we’re changing the way we do things. In this role, you’ll take us to the next level and create a legacy for yourself in the process.” – Wirral Council advert to recruit a new Director of Finance will make you laugh , vomit or both.

“The right to equal treatment and equality are human rights. Human rights are not privileges. That’s why they are called rights. I suggest Mr Field goes back to the drawing board. His comments are a disgrace and he should now apologise. Furthermore, if the Labour Party wishes to prove that it has truly changed its tune, it will need to demonstrate that the New Labour old guard are no longer calling the shots and put the voices of disabled people first. The last time we looked, Mr Field was not a spokesperson for disabled people.” John McArdle from campaign group Black Triangle also responds to Field’s comments. By the way people from Birkenhead , just a reminder, you are allowed to disagree with your MP.

Comrades, “Now is the time” to stop acting like a “Party within a party” – and even like a “Momentum within Momentum”.

It is time to grasp that the mainstream (often called the “Left”) has won back the heart and soul of the Labour Party.  I do not know of a single member of the Seacombe Branch who has not fully supported my own declarations for Corbyn on the two websites or who does not support him now.  So why introduce friction where there need be none? Let’s try now to be a single Labour Party in Seacombe Ward.

Some comrades will remember that we also, for a while, held “Songs of the Labour Movement” musical evenings in the Park View Social Club – an opportunity for comrades to perform – or just listen and rub shoulders informally.  But, since then, we have had the difficulty of the Party being suspended so long that many of us don’t even know each other. – Cllr Adrian Jones keeps the red flag flying and addresses Wallasey CLP members seemingly in denial about the circumstances that led to the local branch being suspended by the Labour Party.

“Basically, it is the same thing over and over and over: incompetence, very poor communication (with me, but also with other agencies and between themselves), rudeness, poor or non-existent note-taking, people leaving at short notice and with no proper explanation, etc etc. It just goes on and on.

When the Klonowski enquiry produced its damning report, I briefly hoped that the people found to be grossly incompetent (and, in some cases, corrupt) would be removed. Disheartening, to say the least, to see people like Steve Foulkes still in place. Where is the accountability? There simply is none.

It beggars belief that Wirral Council has not been placed in special measures. I daresay the reasons behind that are political. The Tories asking for it are being hypocritical because part of the problem is chronic underfunding from central govt but I do think that being placed in special measures would be the best thing. The only thing, actually, that would give people like me and my son the chance at least of a semi-decent service. I know special measures are not a panacea but they would be our best chance.” – A Carer contacts us to describe her experience of trying to get a much needed service for her disabled son.

As for Crabby well he is one vile disgusting bully who goes around picking on women. His words to me were, ” your a f@@@ing Deaf, Fat Bitch”.This was I (sic) front of school children at the holocaust memorial service.Crabby refuses to answer to the complaint and will slope off as he has been deselected. There is another one you may be interested in but I will give you her next week after I’ve met with the whip, some interesting times ahead with key people leaving the group at May’s elections, positions are up for grabs and scary times ahead for who will become chair of the group etc. And I haven’t I have had him suspended and took him to task, I’m not an easy push over I just don’t believe this man should be near politics or vulnerable people.

Wirral Leaks : You need to look higher up. Crabtree is a nonentity.

Oh I have stuff from a high up, all in good time xx It’s prob worth noting that if I did as I was told over this case Labour would not of took it any further and I would not of been suspended. I was given an ultimatum and they were willing to brush over the accusation. I knew 100% I had done nothing so refused the offer with no hesitation.

Frank Field has been channelling Blessed Margaret Thatcher again.

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn becomes the latest person to be figuratively handbagged by the Grande Dame of the Labour Party.

First of all , Frankenfield gets his knickers in a twist about “Momentum” –  which depending on your viewpoint is either a group of Labour supporters trying to galvanise grassroots support for a new socialist dawn led by Jezza or a group of rabid Stalinists bent on deselecting Labour MPs untrue to the cause.

The MP for Birkenhead is of course safe in the knowledge that he reigns supreme in one of the safest seats in the country and can blithely ignore the views of his plebeian constituents. The complete contempt he has for the people who voted him into power is clearly demonstrated in this recent car crash TV interview :

Worse still – this self-styled champion of the poor – well the ones that do as they’re told and know their place that is – was one of 21 Labour MPs who defied the Labour Party whip last night and shamefully abstained during Chancellor George Osborne’s Fiscal Responsibility Charter vote.

The ‘Charter’ means that future spending cuts will be more brutal than Osborne has implemented during the past five years – even at times when the economy is booming and the country can afford it. By his actions Frankenfield not only makes a political point by undermining Corbyn’s leadership but he thereby condones austerity measures that will adversely affect his own constituents.

Perhaps the next time we hear local Labour councillors hypocritically blaming the Tories when council spending cuts are announced we need to remind them where their spiritual leader and protector stands on the matter.

We’re left thinking at Leaky Towers as to whether someone needs to tip “Momentum”  off as to exactly what Field and his crooked council crew have been up to locally as that would seem to be the only way to shift this safe-seat hugging hypocrite.
