As you know Wirral Leaks likes to take an oblique (some might say obtuse) view of local news stories. So when your pictures of Harry and Meghan’s visit to Birkenhead started to arrive we thought we’d avoid the obvious and pick out the pics that we thought were particularly pertinent to the points we’d like to make and therefore we make no apologies that there are no actual pictures of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. For example we particularly liked the above picture as it reminded us that, indeed, the Royal Family are a now merely a branch of the entertainment industry.
Talking of which they say that politics is showbiz for ugly people and it must be said that the Royal visit to Birkenhead was a Frank Field production par excellence inevitably including a visit to his latest pet project the Number 7 Community Cafe. Surely we all knew that this was going to be the ‘secret’ visit that wasn’t included in the itinerary announced last week in the press. However is it just us who think it slightly obscene that a couple who are having £3 million spent on renovating their first home, which will be covered by the Sovereign Grant funded by the taxpayer, were visiting people who use Number 7 because they struggle to pay the bills and find themselves in food and fuel poverty ?
We were also taken with these couple of pictures involving a member of Wirral’s Highways Department getting an excellent view of of today’s succession of photo opportunities. We’re just wondering that after all he’s done for ‘his boys’ in the Highways Department that it’s Frank Field rather than Harry and Meghan that is being paid homage…
“Listen Janette dear, I’m well aware of your Republican tendencies but the Royals have their uses in times of trouble so do be a sweetie and step away from Twitter next week… and anyway never forget I’m more regal than any of them…”
Of course we couldn’t let the news pass that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (aka Prince Harry and Meghan) were visiting Birkenhead next week following the invitation from its MP Frank Field. Needless to say Frankenfield is ‘delighted’ as desperate times call for desperate measures and is there anything more desperate that roping in the royals to prop up your popularity and putting out the flags when support within the local Labour Party is flagging?
Will Frankenfield be showing the royal couple round the town he likes to call ‘Beirut’ and which is inhabited by people he refers to as ‘scallywags’ ? Needless to say local measures to tackle violence, poverty ,deprivation and anti -social behaviour will be highlighted on the royal mini-tour of the town which we are sure will leave a lasting and positive impression. But let’s not forget a trip to see the Wilfred Owen statue shoved to the side of Hamilton Square. Just let’s hope Prince Harry doesn’t don his Nazi regalia as our Fun with Fascism story highlighted it seems to be de rigueur on Wirral for someone to rock up at a World War One commemoration dressed up as a fascist.
We’re not sure that an introduction to Wirral Council leader Cllr Phil ‘ Power Boy Pip’ Davies is not such a good idea though . What if one of the nation’s sweethearts asks the usual royal question “And what is that you do? …” They might be in for a bit of a shock at the answer but then let’s face it Pip is unlikely to answer truthfully is he?
Perhaps a better option to be a guest of honour would be ardent royalist Cllr Janette Williamson – she must want to enquire how Prince Harry’s dear grandpapa is, for as we know from this story she takes a particular interest in the wellbeing of the Duke of Edinburgh…
We admit to be being late to the (Nazi) party with this one. But we couldn’t help presenting you with this stocking filler brought to us by an appalled reader before we move on to our Wirral Leaks ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ Special :
It has been brought to my attention by a very upset /disgusted couple who bought tickets to attend a concert ‘Then and Now commemorating 100 years since WW1’
The charity evening held at Wallasey Town Hall was to raise funds for the Mayor’s Charities on Friday 30th November.
Apparently the evening included the comperes (2) wearing Swastikas and performing Nazi salutes, and wearing Hitler moustaches, all part of the elderly comperes’ ‘comedy routine’
I am told the event was organised for the Mayor & Mayoress by 2 members of the Wirral Conservative party Sheila Clarke and Cherry Povall* ( one a current councillor and the other a past councillor) why would anyone find this blatant distasteful act acceptable.
My source also said the sound system broke down, and in their opinion the evening was poorly executed/organised.
Also in attendance (as guests one would assume) were the Deputy Lord-Lieutenant, and Mayors from other areas, heaven only knows what they thought.
This person also informed me that high ranking TA (Territorial Army) personnel were in attendance and I am sure they must have been very upset, disturbed and embarrassed at this clear display of fascism! Fascism is never funny in my opinion.
*who we’ve been since informed were allegedly responsible for ‘organising food’ only
We can only disagree on one point and that is that in the right hands satire and bad taste can be a good thing when it comes to undermining fascism. Let’s face it – it’s our stock in trade.Think Charlie Chaplin’s ‘TheGreat Dictator’ or Mel Brook’s ‘The Producers’. Otherwise it’s Prince Harry in Nazi drag or that ‘situation comedy’ abomination ‘Heil,Honey I’m Home’ – crass ,embarrassing and WTF were they thinking!?
But then Wallasey Town Hall is well used to harbouring right wing fanatics – it’s just a shame that most of them seem to be in charge of the local Labour Party!
